Overview

A contemporary four-bedroom family residence with a detached staff quarters, designed around a carefully planned split-level arrangement that responds efficiently to the site while maximizing usable outdoor space. The level changes allow the parking area to be integrated beneath the upper residential wing, reducing the amount of land consumed by surface parking and keeping the main garden open, green and private. The house is organized as a series of interconnected volumes that balance openness with privacy. Large glazed openings bring natural light deep into the interior and create strong visual connections between the living spaces, terraces and landscaped grounds. Cantilevered upper floors, recessed balconies, timber screens and deep roof overhangs provide shade while giving the residence a distinctive contemporary identity. Internally, split levels help define the different family zones without completely separating them, allowing the kitchen, dining, lounge, family room and bedroom areas to remain visually connected while retaining their individual character.

The Story

The client wanted a modern four-bedroom family home that could accommodate generous living spaces, a detached staff quarters and sufficient parking without allowing vehicles to dominate the site. Privacy, natural light, spacious interiors and a strong connection to the garden were central to the brief. The design responds through a split-level planning strategy that uses the building itself to accommodate parking beneath the elevated residential wing. This reduces the parking footprint, preserves more of the plot for landscaped lawn and creates a clear separation between vehicular movement and the principal family spaces. The main living areas are arranged around an open kitchen, dining and lounge sequence that extends naturally toward the terraces and garden. A secondary family room provides a more private place for relaxation and connects to the master-bedroom level through an internal stair. Large windows, corner glazing and glazed balconies bring daylight into the house while allowing the interiors to overlook different parts of the property. The bedrooms are positioned within quieter upper-level wings, giving each room privacy, natural light and access to framed external views. Timber fins and decorative screens provide solar control and privacy while adding texture to the elevations. Deep overhangs protect the glazing from excessive heat and create sheltered balconies and outdoor living areas. The resulting home is spacious without feeling excessive, contemporary without becoming cold, and carefully planned around the practical routines of family life. By integrating parking into the structure and using the site levels strategically, the design achieves a generous four-bedroom residence, a staff quarters, multiple family spaces and meaningful landscaping within a compact and efficient footprint.
