Twala House

Overview

Bold 3-bedroom home that breaks from the conventional Kenyan bungalow with a striking identity of its own. The design centers on a dramatic crimson feature wall: tall, planar, and graphic — that acts as both a sculptural landmark and the organizing element of the entire façade. Exposed masonry textures meet clean white finish and warm ochre accents which creates a palette that feels grounded yet contemporary. The result is a house that announces itself with confidence without sacrificing the warmth of a family home.

The Story

The client wanted a 3-bedroom residential home that felt genuinely different; not the typical box-and-pitched-roof formula that dominates Kenyan residential neighborhoods. The brief called for strong visual character, modern detailing, and a home that would stand out on the street while remaining livable and unpretentious. The central design challenge was achieving that distinctiveness within the constraints of a modest footprint and a standard single-storey structure. Rather than adding complexity through form alone, the approach focused on contrast, pairing the raw honesty of face-block masonry with crisp plastered surfaces, and grounding the composition with a crimson panel that rises above the roofline. The geometric line pattern scored into the panel adds depth and movement without ornamentation for its own sake. The wide, low canopy over the entrance draws visitors in naturally, while generous window openings on the façade keep the interiors bright and connected to the outside. The client gets a home that photographs well, reads as architecturally considered, and, more importantly, feels genuinely theirs: a departure from the ordinary that holds up in everyday life.
