Carl's Crest
Overview
Modest County Home built on sloping land that makes good use of levels and exploits all views. I designed a residence featuring a single-pitched roof with opposite slopes, creating dramatic high ceilings and allowing for overhead clerestory windows. This passive design strategy floods interiors with natural light while drawing hot air upward for constant ventilation. Exposed ceilings add warmth and volume, and every living space is oriented to frame key views of the surrounding slopes.

The Story
Client wanted a light-filled, energy-efficient family home on a sloped site that maximized natural ventilation, views, and spatial flow. Key requirements: 3 bedrooms + guest room, detached servants’ quarters, high ceilings, and a design that reduced reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical cooling. The design delivers a bright, airy, low-energy home that feels larger than its footprint. They get to experience improved comfort without air-conditioning in temperate months, reduced daytime lighting needs, and a strong indoor-outdoor connection. The client gained a distinctive, site-responsive house that respects the land’s topography while offering modern, flexible living for family and guests.
